What a difference this made in my Epiphone Les Paul!,
I put the Seymour Duncan SH-1 ’59 pickup into the bridge of my Epiphone Les Paul Quilt-Top. The stock pickups lacked the chunky bottom-end and biting highs that characterize the “classic” Les Paul sound. I couldn’t be more pleased with the results I’ve gotten from the ’59. It delivers crisp highs, smooth mids, and a nice fat bass tone. The tone of this pickup is characteristic of the Gibson classic Patent-Applied For(PAF) tone that is similar to your famous Les Paul Players like Jimmy Page (when he plays live; if you listen to Jimmy Page and the Black Crows Live you’ll know what I mean)and, of course, Slash (I know he plays Alnico 2-type pickups, but the primary difference is that the ’59 doesn’t boost midrage quite as much). This is not a high output pickup. I don’t recommend that you buy this pickup with the primary intention of playeing heavy metal. But that doesn’t mean this pickup won’t produce a good high gain tone; quite the contrary, you can easily play not only classic rock, blues, or country with this pickups, but you can easily get 80′s and 90′s rock/metal tones as well if you’ve got a high gain amp/pedal.
In conclusion, out of my three primary guitars (Gibson SG with seymour duncan sh-5 in the bridge, Schecter hellraiser with EMG 81/89, and my Epi Les Paul with the ’59), my les paul now gets probably 40% of my playing time; maybe more lately since installing the pickup.
