The Rolling Stones: Masters Of Longevity
The Rolling Stones are a UK rock band that has been with us a long time by any standard, with a career now occupying five ten-year periods. Consistency and the ability to remain relevant are the most noteworthy of the band’s trademarks. On a Rolling Stones vinyl from decades ago, we perceive the sound of dynamic, hard-hitting rock, and on one of their CD releases from modern times, almost the same passion. The group still quickly sells out shows on its extensive world tours. It is as near to a rock institution as can exist.
Having formed in the early 1960’s, the Stones found that they were able to take advantage of the British Invasion trend to gain a following worldwide. The distinction between the Stones and the vast percentage of groups in the movement, though, was that their sound, from the get-go, was heavily laden with blues and R&B. In mid-decade, they were using a compounding of rock, jazz, and folk. They went on to try out psychedelia for the duration of a single release before coming back to a bluesier sound, even if this was mixed with more country and pure rock than their original sound.
The Stones ran with their blues-country-rock mixture all the way to the middle of the 1970’s. The musical trends that had become popular by the late decade, though, were a real challenge to the band’s ongoing relevancy. The group’s remaining on top of the music scene was simply a matter of utilizing the new punk, disco, and reggae styles to their convenience and incorporating them into their music.
In the 1980’s, the group hit a trouble spot. A rift grew between lead vocalist Mick Jagger and rhythm guitar man Keith Richards, the group’s major players, and the two of them created solo recordings. Those efforts were only stabs at functioning in a non-group setting for Jagger and Richards, though, and the band did not actually separate. Their respite from touring which accompanied the solo records ended quickly with the commencement of the extensive array of shows they booked at the point of their 1989 album Steel Wheels’ launch. A trio of album releases ensued in the 1990’s and 2000’s. The efforts were not substantial steps forward, but tastefully incorporated modern production elements into the band’s rough sound that fans had come to know and admire.
People pulling out old Stones vinyl albums and playing them on their Rega turntables are taking in the sound of a band that, astonishingly, is still alive and well all this time later. The Britons, while constantly having their finger on the pulse of changes in music, have still succeeded in preserving their unique identity over the span of all the years. The sustained popularity of the group is verification of the degree to which they have become engrained in popular culture. The Stones’ incredible staying power up to this point seems to signify them never breaking up or moving out of the public eye.
