Computer Games Vs Traditional Games
The last 20 years and the revolution of the internet and the computers has shaped tremendously the games kids have been playing. From the classic outdoors war games simulation and football we have ended up in today’s computer based activities.
Judging whether the change has been for the kid’s benefit or not is something for the sociologists of the future to investigate and make conclusions. Adults and people who didn’t have the chance to be part of the digital games revolution oppose strongly in that great influence computer games have in their kids lives and their main argument is that computer games are too static and they do not motivate children to move and excercise!
In my mind, because today’s kids are exposed to such a vast amount of information since the advent of the internet, they have more general knowledge compared to my generation that information was based on the TV and the newspapers.
It can be said that creativity and emotions into kids’ play has been remained pretty much the same although the way kids sense them has totally changes. The game of ‘exploration’, probably unknown to today’s kids is a great example as it was one of the favourite boys’ games in the 70s and 80s. The idea was getting ‘lost’ into an abandoned warehouse or an inhabited mansion and try to discover as many weird and unusual things as possible.
I will never forget the day we entered that warehouse that used to belong to an electrical components rich businessman who had recently died and all his businesses ceased to exist. It’s not easy to describe our emotions and curiosity each time we were coming across unusual objects varying from cable ties to circuit breakers, everything was really striking our childish’s minds.
The equivalent of that game today would be one of those amazing adventure games where the main character has the freedom to enter any building, wonder around, collect objects etc. In both cases, adrenaline is floating massively and the emotions are equal. Being lucky enough to belong to that transitional generation where traditional and computer games were equally important I can confess that both types of games were giving me the same ‘high’. In conclusion, it is harsh to reject computer games are useless and they have nothing to offer just because they are not physical enough.
